Meet Darryl

iBOT Personal Mobility Device

Mobility Changes Lives. Donate Today.

Darryl Garrett was born and raised in northeast Houston, Texas, where he grew up in a close-knit family. From a young age, Darryl enjoyed spending time outdoors with friends and traveling with his father in his semi-truck. He developed a love for music and sports, joining the school band in middle school and playing football in high school. Some of his favorite memories involve backyard family gatherings, school dances, and trips to the movies and arcades.

Darryl began his career in law enforcement in 2018 with Harris County Constable Precinct 4, following encouragement from friends and family who saw his dedication as a correctional officer. He worked in the traffic enforcement division, where he was responsible for keeping the roads safe and responding to accidents. He received the MADD Award for removing impaired drivers from the roads and was honored with the Purple Heart and the Texas Star Medal from the Texas Governor.

In 2021, while working an off-duty job, Darryl and two coworkers were ambushed by an armed gunman. One partner was killed, and another was critically injured. Darryl sustained severe injuries that left him paralyzed. His recovery journey has been filled with emotional and physical challenges, but the unwavering support of his mother, sister, pastor, and community helped him keep his faith and find a renewed sense of purpose.

Despite every day obstacles due to his injuries, he remains determined to live independently and stay active—he enjoys movies, occasional nights out, and spending time outdoors.

Darryl’s motivation comes from his faith in God and his desire to inspire others facing similar challenges. His dream is to walk again one day or become an advocate for others living with disabilities. Through every hardship, Darryl continues to push forward with courage, purpose, and hope.

American Mobility Project is proud to announce that we are partnering with the Gary Sinise Foundation to provide a grant for Darryl to have his very own iBOT Personal Mobility Device. Darryl believes advanced mobility equipment like the iBOT will help to give him the freedom to access uneven terrain, inclines, and other environments without relying on others for help.
