Gabriel’s story begins in Louisville, Kentucky, where his family built a life centered around adventure, connection, and the outdoors. Before becoming parents, Gabriel’s mom and dad loved rock climbing and traveling. Those values of exploration and resilience would later shape how they approach life with their children.
Gabriel and his twin brother, Alexander, were born three months premature during the COVID pandemic. Just two weeks after birth, Gabriel faced a life-threatening diagnosis: Necrotizing Enterocolitis, a severe infection of the bowel that primarily affects premature babies. His survival is nothing short of remarkable, and his strength has been evident from the very beginning.
After coming home from the NICU, Gabriel’s journey continued to unfold in unexpected ways. His family learned he is profoundly deaf, prompting them to begin learning American Sign Language and exploring cochlear implants to give him access to multiple forms of communication. At eight months old, an MRI revealed a severe bilateral brain injury, likely a result of the earlier infection. This had not appeared in earlier scans. What followed were countless appointments, therapies, and questions, but also a deepened sense of purpose and advocacy for Gabriel’s future.
Through it all, Gabriel has remained a light. He loves music, being outside, and spending time with his family. He is drawn to bright, shiny colors (especially gold, yellow, and red!) and brings joy to everyday moments. He attends preschool and participates in multiple therapies including physical, occupational, speech, and vision, and is learning to communicate using an eye gaze device.
Gabriel’s family often reflects on the incredible care they received in the NICU and the lasting impact of the nurses who supported them during such a difficult time. Today, his therapists continue to play a vital role, not only in Gabriel’s development, but in the life of their entire family. They are his biggest cheerleaders and trusted guides.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Gabriel approaches each day with a smile and a willingness to try new things, whether that is riding a horse, stepping into the ocean, or exploring something unfamiliar. His curiosity and love for adventure shine through, even without words. His family is committed to making sure he can participate fully in life alongside his brothers, creating an environment where inclusion is not just a goal, but a way of life.
It was no surprise when Gabriel lit up during a therapy session last summer while trying an adapted bike. For Gabriel, riding is not just an activity. It is freedom, independence, and the chance to simply be a kid. It is also a powerful reminder to his brothers, and to everyone around him, that the world is better when it is built for everyone.
Earlier this year, Gabriel’s friend and AMP recipient Carlos had his dad share a special announcement at our February fundraiser that Gabriel had officially been approved for a grant for his very own Freedom Concepts bike. Today, that moment has come full circle. Gabriel has received his bike and is already out riding, embracing the joy, freedom, and adventure that comes with it.
